  11. There are some tacit assumptions in Sanjay Lall's suggestions
  12. for xdvik-1.8 that need to be looked into.  
  13.  
  14. 1.  That all 300 dpi fonts can be declared to be "imagen"
  15.     or anything else for that matter.  In fact, if imagen
  16.     represents a write-black print-engine, it is precisely
  17.     the wrong choice.  Except in the extraordinary case
  18.     of a site that regularly displays dvi previews as
  19.     white on black, you want a write-white font for all low
  20.     resolution images.  Of course, if you are only generating
  21.     oddball sizes greater than magstep(1.5) or magstep (2.0)
  22.     then it may be O.K to force 300 dpi to the mode of the
  23.     hard copy printer, but the suggestion made does not
  24.     permit that distinction.  
  25. 2.  One minute is wishful thinking for some machines, and unjust to
  26.     others.  I have the brief---all too brief, alas---joy of
  27.     running a machine on which the log output to the screen usually
  28.     takes more time than the actual font compilation.  Then I go b
  29.     back to a 680x0 machine on which the "minutes" fly like hours,
  30.     usually because hours is what they are.

  32. It is possible that some enhancement is appropriate in the way
  33. tex-make.c chooses what it does under xdvi, but it doesn't
  34. seem to me that this is the enhancement.
